Representation 3: Young people are "soft"

“It’s a safety blanket: why more and more teenagers are relying on life coaches.” - Newspaper Article https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/jul/31/safety-blanket-why-more-teenagers-relying-life-coaches Life coaching is not to be confused with therapy. “You go to therapy because something is broken and you want it to be fixed,” says the life coach Michael Bungay Stanier, “whereas in coaching we have the philosophy that you’re resourceful, creative and whole and it’s about amplifying what’s working now. Coaching is often short-term – six to 12 months – and very positive and goal-oriented, whereas therapy can move much slower and much deeper.” Narrative Whilst the heading might sound negative this newspaper article is a positive media article about the youth of today being proactive about their futures and using life coaches to help them navigate the often-challenging period of time to becoming an adult.   With four different stories of youth using life co...

"Quicksand" - TV Show Sebastian: "Say that it's you and me.  Say it." Maya: "It's you and me."   Narrative Quicksand is a Swedish TV Show which appears to be about a school shooting however the underlying theme of the show is about the events that take place prior to the shooting that detail an abusive relationship between a young girl Maya and a young boy Sebastian.   The show weaves in and out of the past and present and shows glimpses of the tragedy will unfold.   In the beginning the audience is led to believe that the relationship between the two is perfect and idealistic however the reality is far from true with Sebastian, a victim of his own father’s emotional abuse and neglect, turns on Maya and begins to emotionally abuse and manipulate her.   The show brings forward many issues that youth may face as they are growing up such as parental abuse and neglect, suicide attempts, drug use and sex which are ...

"Fifteen" - Song lyrics by Taylor Swift 'Cause when you're fifteen, Somebody tells you they love you You're gonna believe them And when you're fifteen' Narrative The lyrics in the song “Fifteen” written and sung by Taylor Swift tells the story of a young girl who is starting out in freshman year of high school and is based loosely off Taylor's own experience as a fifteen-year-old.   The lyrics touch on many stereotypical images that are portrayed in popular culture of young females in high school such as finding a first love only to have them “use” her and don’t love her back.   The lyrics touch on the importance of developing strong peer friendships in a time of life where one is trying to discover who they are and that there will be distinct groups of people in high school like the “cool” kids who seem to be the ideal version of what the media is portraying as beautiful.   The song insinuates that no matter wh...

Questions

Questions 1.      Are young people a homogenous group? No, I don’t believe that young people are a homogenous group however there is a constant debate around what being a young person actually means and people are always trying to put a definition on it (Bruce, 2015, p. 68).   Young people are not homogenous but rather just like any age group, young people are human beings learning to adjust to a new stage in their life and should be treated as individuals who may in fact be competently handling immense burdens, facing stressful decisions and trying to figure out how to handle it all.   There are certainly common themes that young people face while developing into an adult such as puberty (Chua & Chang, 2015, p. 190).   However, the circumstances of how upbringing, their cultural background and even life experiences both positive and negative will have implications of the way in which a person behaves at any stage of the...
