Narrative
The Diary of
Anne Frank is a true story about a Jewish family in Holland who are forced into
hiding in a small Dutch house as the Germans invade during World War 2. Anne is a 13-year-old girl who is given a
diary on her 13th birthday and is excited because she has something
to confide all her secret thoughts into.
As the story develops the act of Sunday the September 27, 1942 tells the
events of Anne’s day as it unfolds. Anne
has a fight with her mother, and she feels as though her mother doesn’t “know
her at all.” Even though the book is
written in the 1940’s during World War 2 the events are common to teenagers of
today suggesting that the themes of being a teenager are common through time. The whole book has common themes that
teenagers of today can resonate with Anne including exploring her sexuality,
feeling as though no one in the world understands her and that everyone hates her. The diary continues until her 15th
year where the diary suddenly ends, and Anne and her family are finally found
and are sent to concentration camps.
Only Anne’s father survives. (197

Adolescence is a
cultural construct that has been explained as being something that is socially
achieved through a range of social, cultural, political, economic and ideological
factors rather than seen as something that is universally experienced in
different ways by different people (Bruce, 2015, p. 68). Bruce (2015) explains that media then
contributes to this social construct by portraying teenagers in popular culture
and by understanding how youth is represented in the media we can then
understand how people view adolescents.
In this example Anne as a young person in 1942 experiences many of the
same issues that young people face today suggesting that whilst the themes are
common the situation in which a person experiences them can vary and as such
may assist or hinder their ability to overcome the situations. (132 Words)
